Emmy walked into her apartment, perfectly aware that the grin she’d been sporting all afternoon was still firmly in place. Her precious kitty, Luna, jumped onto her lap the second she sank down onto the couch.

“Hello, sweet baby,” she murmured as she petted her cat. Luna, a true lap cat, immediately settled down, purring contentedly, as Emmy stroked her soft fur.

Emmy lifted her feet to the coffee table and rested her head on the back of the sofa. She played the entire day over in her mind, trying to recall the last time she’d felt this…happy.

She’d sequestered herself away too long after her mother’s death, falling into a deep depression, the days stretching into one long pity party. And she’d found herself drifting back to that same dark place since losing her dad.

She refused to do that any longer.

Today had taught her that there was a wonderful world out there, just waiting for her to discover it.

All she had to do was be brave.

Brave enough to eat alone in a restaurant, to try Guinness, to open up a new document and write.

Whether it was fate or simply dumb luck, stumbling into Pat’s Pub had been life-changing.

Her words were flowing again.

The loneliness that had been pressing down on her chest had lifted. No…it was gone completely.

She’d met people she truly liked, people she hoped to one day call friends.

And for the first time in a long time, she had something to look forward to. Because Padraig and his dear Pop Pop had seemed genuinely sincere in their desire for her to return.

At least she hoped they’d meant it because she wasn’t sure she’d be able to play it cool, wouldn’t be able to wait too long before returning.

Tomorrow, Padraig had said. She wondered what he’d think if she took him at his word and showed up again…tomorrow.

The pub was calling to her.

She sighed, forcing herself to tell the truth. Even if it was only to herself.

Because it wasn’t the pub calling.

It was Padraig.

She’d seen something in his eyes that she recognized…something she’d seen too many times reflected in the mirror.

He was a kindred spirit, someone lost in grief, sadness, loneliness.

And she longed to help him the same way he’d—unwittingly—helped her today. She needed a friend, and she had the feeling he did too. They had a lot in common—a shared history that included their hometown, high school, and watching the Orioles play at Camden Yards, a love for Guinness—she thought with a snicker—and their belief in Irish magic.

Luna rolled over, a silent demand that she wanted her belly rubbed. Emmy indulged her. “Yeah,” she whispered to her cat. “I’m definitely going back. Tomorrow.”
